Jacob's Well: History and Spirituality Within the Depths of the Samaritan Church
Also known as Samaritan's Well, it is a well of water with a depth of 41 meters located within the Church of Jacob's Well. This well holds significant religious value and is situated in the Balata area on the outskirts of the city of Nablus in the West Bank. It is 1 km away from the Tomb of our Master Joseph (peace be upon him). The well is named after Jacob due to his purchase of the land surrounding the well and his pitching of his tent there.
The site gained its religious importance through the holy books of the Quran, Torah, and Gospel in the story of our Master Jesus son of Mary (the Christ) (peace be upon him) during his journey to meet the Samaritan woman. By the year 333 AD, the site was identified as the place where Christ met the Samaritan woman.
In the year 384 AD, a Crusader church was built over the well due to the significance, sanctity, and association with the Church of Jacob's Well. Today, it is one of the most important religious and historical tourist sites in Palestine.
Access to the well can be gained through the entrance of the Church of Jacob's Well. Descending the stairs leads to a vault containing the well. Visitors are accompanied by a bucket, icons, and many lit candles.
