Baqi Al-Gharqad cemetery
Baqi Al-Gharqad Cemetery is the closest historical place to the Prophet's Mosque. It is said that about 10,000 companions, including Uthman ibn Affan and the Mothers of the Believers (the wives of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him), except for Khadijah and Maymunah, as well as the grandson of the Prophet, Hassan ibn Ali, were buried there.
The cemetery was established after the migration of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Makkah to Madinah and after the construction of the Prophet's Mosque in its initial state. At that time, a companion from the Ansar (the residents of Madinah who supported the Prophet) passed away, and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) chose this place to be a cemetery for Muslims. Since then, this cemetery became the final resting place for the people of Madinah.
The cemetery is visited by a large number of Muslims from all around the world every year during their performance of Hajj or Umrah.
