Basilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern, also known as the Cathedral or Sunken Palace Cistern, is a system of underground tunnels located in the Sultan Ahmed area of Istanbul, Turkey.

This remarkable underground structure is one of the largest of its kind in the world, covering an impressive area of 9800 square meters. Its construction dates back to the 6th century AD, and it was commissioned by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. Throughout history, the cistern served as a shelter during various crises.

The main attraction within the cistern is the presence of giant columns adorned with intricate Byzantine engravings. The cistern houses an astonishing total of 338 columns. Moreover, the cistern has a sufficient water level, allowing fish to swim freely within its depths.
