London Tower Bridge
On the banks of the River Thames, near the Tower of London, stands the Tower Bridge. Built during the Victorian era, when Britain was undergoing industrial and commercial expansion, this growth led to increased traffic both into and out of the city of London and along the river. Thus, engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry designed a moveable bascule bridge to allow ships to pass through. Two towers were constructed on each end, and the construction began in 1886, taking eight years to complete. It was inaugurated by Prince Albert in 1894.
