Bey Citadel

The Qaitbay Citadel is a venerable historical fortress with origins dating back to the middle ages of the Islamic calendar during the Mamluk rule. It is said to have been built on the same site where the lighthouse of Alexandria collapsed in the year 702 AH after a very strong earthquake. However, the location remained vacant for over a century. The construction of the citadel began in the year 882 AH and took two years to complete. This took place during the era of the Mamluk Sultan of Egypt, Al-Ashraf Abu Al-Nasr Qaitbay. The citadel is situated at the eastern tip of Pharos Island, at the furthest east of the city of Alexandria in the Arab Republic of Egypt.

The citadel boasts four watchtowers, and visitors can enjoy some of the most breathtaking views of the sea from its vantage points. It is exceptionally beautiful from the inside, displaying the intricate and captivating architecture of Islamic Mamluk design. Many tourists are drawn to learn about the stories of the citadel, and to fully appreciate its rich history, it's recommended to bring a tourist guide to uncover all the fascinating narratives surrounding the citadel's past. Don't miss the opportunity to visit this historic and stunning citadel when exploring the city of Alexandria.
