Taqah Fort in Dhofar Governorate

The Taqah Fort is located in the center of the Taqah province, which is part of Dhofar Governorate in the Sultanate of Oman. This fort stands as one of the most important historical landmarks in the province, with its history dating back to the 19th century AD. It served as a headquarters for local and administrative affairs during the reign of Sultan Taymur bin Faisal.

Taqah Fort stands out with its refined and rich artistic colors. Many artistic details were added inside the fort during the restoration work carried out in the 20th century.

The fort is generally composed of two floors. The upper floor includes bedrooms, resting rooms, and a kitchen. The lower floor houses a prison, weapon and food storage rooms, with access from the western gate through the inner courtyard.

History of Taqah Province Fort:

Every visitor to Taqah Fort can witness the Omani heritage and the meticulous attention to the details of Arab-Islamic architectural civilization. In the past, Taqah Fort was a venue for celebrating religious and national occasions. Festivities were held continuously in front of the fort, particularly the traditional "Haboot" processions. People would gather after the Eid prayer at the site of Taqah Fort to congratulate the governor on the holiday, recite poetry, perform the Haboot procession, and shake hands with the governor. The fort also served as a place for conflict resolution and overseeing tasks entrusted to the governor.

Architectural Engineering and Design:

The fort's walls were built using the local porous limestone known as "Taqah Stone." The fort encompasses a range of historical facilities and modern amenities that reflect the province's heritage. Among these are a spacious courtyard, a well, storage rooms for weapons and food, as well as the governor's residential wing.

The fort is further distinguished by three observation towers, which have been restored twice.
