Information about Al-Mirani Castle in Muscat

Mirani Castle or Qasr Al-Kabeetan is one of the most important tourist attractions in the city of Muscat, along with Al Jalali Castle. Both castles add a charming beauty to the city.

History of Mirani Castle:

The history of Mirani Castle dates back to the Portuguese occupation of the Sultanate of Oman. The castle was built in 1588 and served as a fortress alongside Al Jalali Castle, protecting the city walls. It was constructed at the base of a large rock, and a basin for ships was built in its vicinity.

Reason for the Name "Mirani Castle":

Some attribute the name "Mirani" to the Portuguese word "Miranti," which means "prince." Others link the name to "Miranshah," one of the Persian commanders.

Visiting Mirani Castle:

As of now, visitors can only view the castle from the outside, as access to it is restricted by the authorities. Nonetheless, the castle offers a beautiful view from the seaside.

Working Hours at Mirani Castle:

Mirani Castle used to be a tourist destination, but it has been transformed into a military base, making it impossible to visit from the inside at the moment. However, you can still enjoy the beauty of the monument from the outside and the surrounding natural scenery. Additionally, you can visit Al Jalali Castle, also known as the Eastern Castle, which is just 2 km away.
