Learn about the importance of Jacob's Well Church

The Church of Jacob's Well is a church built atop Jacob's Well by the order of Queen Helena, the mother of Byzantine Emperor Constantine, in the 4th century AD. The church bears the name of the well itself due to its religious significance. It is located 76 meters away from Tell Balata in the eastern part of the Palestinian city of Nablus.

History of the Church of Jacob's Well:

The church has witnessed many wars and crises, leading to its destruction and reconstruction multiple times throughout history. The church commissioned by Queen Helena remained intact until it was demolished during the Fatimid period in 1009 CE. The Crusaders rebuilt it in 1154 CE, and it stood during the Crusader rule of Nablus until the city returned to Muslim rule. The departure of the Crusaders led to the church's demolition once again in 1187 CE. Today, a relatively modern church stands on the site.

Religious Significance of Jacob's Well Church:

Today, the Church of Jacob's Well holds significant importance for both Christians and Muslims due to its historical and religious significance. It serves as a place of attraction for Palestinian tourists from all over the world. The church is named after Jacob's Well, which is mentioned in Genesis 33. In this location, a conversation took place between Jesus and the Samaritan woman, also known as "Photini." The meeting between Jesus and the Samaritan woman is recorded in the New Testament, John 4. It's mentioned that Jesus rested there and asked the woman for a drink of water. It is said that the jar from which the water was drawn is preserved inside the church in a glass case. The church also houses various historical artifacts and icons.
