History of the Cathedral of Florence
The Cathedral of Florence was built on the site of the city's second cathedral, which was dedicated to Saint Reparata. As the original cathedral aged and deteriorated over time, the city council of Florence approved the design by architect Arnolfo di Cambio in 1296 AD to construct the Giotto's Campanile to support and expand the Reparata cathedral. This massive project was meant to span 140 years, but due to the designer's death and various delays, it took 50 more years.
The construction of the dome began in 1420 and was completed in 1436. It was the first octagonal dome to be built without a temporary wooden frame in history. The cathedral was inaugurated in the same year and has been a historical site in Florence throughout its long history, serving as a place of importance for the city council.
