Wieliczka Salt Mine: Deep History Unveiled in the Heart of Krakow

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is a mine located in the village of Wieliczka, near the city of Krakow in Poland. It is one of the oldest mines known in history, built in the 13th century AD. It was initially used for extracting rock salt and continued to do so until the late 20th century, specifically in 1996. After that, the mine was transformed from being a source of salt extraction for centuries into three chapels and a church. The church later became a regional cathedral. A unique aspect of these chapels and the church is that they were entirely built underground. Notably, the statues both inside and outside these structures are made from salt rock, adding to their distinctiveness. The mine also features several attractive saltwater lakes.
