History of Medici Riccardi Palace:

Built between 1444 and 1460 by the ruling Medici family, the palace was intended to be the family's headquarters until 1540. After Cosimo de' Medici the Elder took authority over Florence, the official residence was moved to the Palazzo Vecchio. In early 1659, the palace was sold to the Riccardi family. As the European Renaissance era waned, the palace's architectural style no longer matched the Baroque period that followed. The Riccardi family sold the palace to the Tuscan government, and in 1874, it became the regional government's headquarters in Florence. It was named Medici Riccardi Palace and became one of the prominent tourist landmarks in Florence and Italy.
