Meknes-Tafilalet
Meknes is one of the four imperial cities of Morocco and the sixth-largest city in the country in terms of population, with approximately 632,000 inhabitants as recorded in the 2014 Moroccan census. Located in north-central Morocco, it was founded during the Almoravid dynasty as a military settlement. Meknes later became the capital of Morocco during the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail (1672-1727), who built the imperial palace complex and surrounded the city with extensive fortifications and grand gates.
History of Meknes:
The origin of the name "Meknes" has been a subject of debate among historians, with two competing theories—one Berber and one Arabic. The Berber explanation suggests that the name comes from the Amazigh tribe of "Meknassa," meaning "warrior," which hosted Idris I when he first arrived in Morocco. The Meknassa tribe resided between eastern Morocco and Tafilalt.
Meknes did not gain renewed significance until the Alawite dynasty came into power in the second half of the 17th century, specifically during the rule of Sultan Moulay Rashid, the first Alawite sultan to unify Morocco under one rule (1666-1672). Fes once again became the capital of Morocco, while his brother Sultan Moulay Ismail chose Meknes as his capital. After Moulay Ismail's death, political turmoil ensued in Meknes as his sons competed for power. The city lost its status as the capital of Morocco and suffered damage from the 1755 earthquake. It remained neglected until Sultan Mohammed bin Abdullah assumed power in Morocco between 1757 and 1790. He built several projects in Meknes and added the Dar Al Beida Palace to the Akdal Gardens southeast of the main palace complex, which now houses the Royal Military Academy.
Climate:
Meknes has a Mediterranean climate with hot summers influenced by continental conditions. Its climate is similar to some inland cities in southern Portugal, such as Beja and Evora. Winter days in Meknes can be quite cold, with nighttime temperatures dropping to 5 degrees Celsius and reaching a maximum of 15.5 degrees Celsius in December and January. In the summer, average temperatures range between 13 and 30 degrees Celsius.
