Westminster Palace
On the northern bank of the River Thames in the heart of London stands Westminster Palace, the site where both the Houses of Commons and Lords convene, constituting the UK's parliamentary chambers. For this reason, it is also referred to as the Houses of Parliament.
The first royal palace at this location dates back to the 11th century, becoming the primary residence of English monarchs until a significant portion was destroyed by fire in 1512. Subsequently, Westminster became the permanent seat of the British Parliament and home to the Royal Courts of Justice.
In 1834, a massive fire devastated the larger Houses of Parliament, leading to their substantial reconstruction.
