Split evolved over the ruins of an ancient Roman city located on the Adriatic Sea. The Roman Emperor Diocletian ordered the construction of his palace in the area in 296 AD to reside in after retirement. The palace took several years to build, and Diocletian lived there until his death. Afterward, several Roman rulers used the palace as their residence until the 16th century AD when it fell into disrepair.

Split experienced significant growth during the 11th and subsequent centuries and enjoyed a degree of self-governance between the 12th and 14th centuries before being invaded by the Venetians in 1420 AD.

After the fall of Venice in 1797 AD, Split came under Austrian and then French rule briefly.

After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 20th century, Split became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, established in 1918 AD.

During World War II, Italians occupied Split in 1941 AD and ruled until 1943 AD when the city witnessed strong resistance leading to Italy's surrender.
