History of Sarajevo
Sarajevo was founded in 1461 and is sometimes referred to as the "Jerusalem of Europe" because of its rich religious diversity.
The city is famous for being the place where, on June 28, 1914, Gavrilo Princip, a young Bosnian Serb, assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie. This event directly led to the outbreak of World War I. After World War I, Sarajevo became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
Sarajevo fell during World War II, specifically on April 15, 1941, to the Nazi German forces. Shortly after its capture, a strong resistance movement emerged in the city, led by a member of the National Liberation Army named "Walter." He died while leading the final liberation of the city on April 6, 1945. After liberation, Sarajevo became the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
