Sharm Obhur has been mentioned in several travelogues by explorers who visited Jeddah. One of the most notable accounts is by the Arab traveler Ibn Jubayr, who visited the bay in the 6th Hijri century and wrote about it:
"We anchored at a harbor known as Obhur, which is a day's journey from Jeddah. It is one of the most amazing harbors, with a body of sea entering the land and forming a peaceful anchorage. Boats berth there in a tranquil haven." In the 1960s and 1970s, Sharm Obhur did not have any tourist resorts and was primarily a place for Jeddah residents to enjoy leisurely picnics.
