Helsinki: The Enchanting Capital of Finland on the Shores of the Gulf of Finland

Helsinki (in Finnish: Helsinki) is a city located on the shores of the Gulf of Finland in the Uusimaa region. It is the capital of Finland and its largest city. The city had a population of 642,045 according to the 2017 census, covering an area of 213 square kilometers. Helsinki is the political, cultural, and educational center of Finland and was selected as the World Design Capital for the year 2012.

Name and History:

The city was founded in 1550 by King Gustav I and named it Helsingfors. It remained a small town for a long time until a plague outbreak, which affected a large part of the city's population. In 1809, Finland was annexed to Russia after Sweden's loss in the Finnish War, and at that time, Helsinki transformed into a major city. The Russian Emperor relocated the capital from Turku to Helsinki, turning the city into a significant population center.

Helsinki has a moderate continental climate. In winter, temperatures range from -15 to -9 degrees Celsius, with mostly dark days. In summer, temperatures range from 10 to 22 degrees Celsius, with extremely long daylight hours, up to 19 hours a day.
