Bab Bhar, also known as the Sea Gate, is one of the most significant gates that surrounded the city of Tunis. There were more than 18 gates in total.
Bab Bhar was constructed during the Aghlabids' reign, who protected Tunis between the years 800 and 909 AD. Despite passing through numerous centuries marked by wars, revolutions, and changes, Bab Bhar has remained steadfast and proud, declaring itself one of the city's most unbreakable symbols.
The gate, shaped like an arch with a balcony above, was named Bab Bhar because it faced the city's maritime facade, opposite Lake Tunis. However, the gate's location was changed after the surrounding walls of the city were demolished. The gate was dismantled and relocated to Victory Square, near what is now known as Habib Bourguiba Avenue.
Bab Bhar played a crucial role as a bridge between the modern urban area and the ancient city that lies beyond the gate. Today, the gate is surrounded by various city landmarks and streets, along with several cafes and restaurants offering stunning views of the gate.
