St. Augustine's Church
Saint Augustine Church is a Roman Catholic church built in honor of Saint Augustine of Hippo. The construction of the church began in the year 1880 and lasted for about 20 years. The architects succeeded in creating an impressive architectural and artistic plan for the church, combining various building styles. Throughout its long history, the church has suffered damage on multiple occasions and has undergone several restoration projects. One of the most extensive restoration efforts took place from 2010 to 2013, involving Algerian specialists and Italian experts who revitalized the architectural spirit of the place and restored the intricate details of the church. It transformed into a tourist attraction and a religious center that draws thousands of visitors from around the world annually.
The Saint Augustine Church, also known as "Augustinus," consists of a large prayer hall, a small right-side chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, a large central chapel housing the tomb of Saint Augustine, and a left-side chapel serving as a place of worship for Jesus. There's also a priest's residence and other wings, as well as several schools and a refuge for the elderly that provides shelter for seniors from various neighboring regions near the city of Annaba.
